This day marks the end of the nine–day–long Shakambari Navratri festival. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Shakambari incarnated. Shakambari Purnima is a significant day celebrated in India, with temples dedicated to the Goddess of Vegetables, Fruits and Green Leaves. This day marks the appearance of Shakambari Devi after a hundred year drought, when all the plants and crops had died and people had nothing to eat. The Goddess is believed to have emerged from her body with fruits, flowers, vegetables and herbs to feed the hungry. This day holds great importance in temples dedicated to Shakambari Devi in Karnataka and Maharashtra, and is also celebrated during the Chaitra Month (March – April) in Rajasthan.

Devotees believe that taking a holy dip in the sacred rivers Ganga and Yamuna on this day will free them from the cycle of reincarnation and will absolve them of any bad karma they have committed in this or previous births.
